What Happened?

Shares of genetic testing company Natera (NASDAQ:NTRA) jumped 5.2% in the afternoon session after the company announced that Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency granted regulatory approval for its Signatera test as a companion diagnostic in muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

The approval enables the Signatera test to serve as a companion diagnostic to guide adjuvant atezolizumab treatment decisions for individuals with muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Following the regulatory clearance from Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency, Natera announced that it plans to proceed with a commercial launch in Japan in the first half of 2027.

After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $387.44, up 4.5% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Natera’s shares are quite volatile and have had 17 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 5 months ago when the stock dropped 12.2% on the news that the company reported mixed first-quarter 2026 financial results, where strong revenue growth was overshadowed by a wider-than-expected net loss. Although Natera posted a significant 38.8% year-over-year increase in revenue to $696.6 million, beating analysts' expectations, investors focused on the deteriorating bottom line. The company's GAAP loss widened to $0.60 per share from $0.50 per share in the same quarter last year. This result also missed Wall Street's consensus estimate of a $0.55 loss per share. The widening loss, despite surging sales, raised concerns among investors about the company's path to profitability.

Natera is up 69.3% since the beginning of the year, and at $387.44 per share, it has set a new 52-week high. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Natera’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $3,083.
